FAQ #160: My zakat amount is very large and it worries me. What should I do?

It is completely natural to feel worried when the Zakat amount seems big. But remember, Zakat is only 2.5% of your eligible wealth; you keep the remaining 97.5%. To put it in other words, if you have $100, you would only need to pay $2.50, and that is once a year! Linguistically, Zakat carries the meaning of growth, increase, blessing, and purification. It is called ‘zakat’ because giving this portion purifies the wealth of the giver and causes it to grow in goodness. The spirit and essence of zakat therefore is not simply the reduction of wealth in numerical terms. Rather, it is meant to increase wealth in blessing, purify it from shortcomings, and bring spiritual growth to the giver while supporting those in need.

Thus, Zakat is not a decrease in your wealth, it is a purification, protection, and source of barakah.

Allah highlights the virtues of Zakat:

وَرَحْمَتِى وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَىْءٍۢ ۚ فَسَأَكْتُبُهَا لِلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ١٥٦

And My mercy encompasses everything. I will ordain mercy for those who shun evil, pay alms-tax (Zakat), and believe in Our revelations.” (Al-A’raf 156)

Take from their wealth ˹O Prophet˺ charity (Zakat) to purify and bless them, and pray for them—surely your prayer is a source of comfort for them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” (At-taubah 103)

These verses remind us that Zakat brings Allah’s mercy and purifies both our wealth and ourselves. Sometimes we do not know whether our earnings are free from shortcomings, non-halal gains, or doubtful incomes. Thus, Zakat cleanses and blesses what we own.

The Prophet ﷺ  also said: “Charity does not decrease wealth… “ (Muslim 2588), meaning that giving for Allah’s sake does not reduce provision; it increases barakah and spiritual growth. In another narration, after the Prophet ﷺ   passed, Abu Bakr waged war against those who refused to continue to pay their Zakat (Bukhari 1399). The justification is that zakat is a personal obligation and one of the pillars of Islam, just like Solat. Thus, anyone who fulfils the requirement should continue to perform their obligation.

If the amount feels overwhelming, you may plan ahead by setting aside small amounts monthly. Keep in mind that Zakat is only obligated, only if your wealth exceeds the nisab and held for one lunar year. You are only required to pay what is truly due – no more, no less – and what you give for Allah’s sake is never wasted.
